Some Soccer Sectional Results and More

After defeating a strong HF-L team 2-1 in the quarterfinal game, the Boys Soccer team lost to Aquinas 1-0 on a penalty kick in the Class A semi-final game. After starting tentatively for the first 15 minutes or so, they played Aquinas fairly evenly the rest of the game. A good showing against what is essentially an all-star team.

The Girls Soccer team lost to HF-L in the quarter finals. Girls Volleyball is still competing, I believe after winning the league championship.

Cross Country sectionals are coming up this weekend. Both the boys and girls have good chances to do well in the team standings.

Website Abuse Update

After a spammer used this website to contact some number of users, I have spent some time trying to figure out the best countermeasures. Since the dimwit utilized the Alumni Directory Contact Form I immediately removed that feature. So if you have received one of these obvious scam emails from Wayne Alumni E-mail after Oct 16th around noon, please let me know (check the actual received date, not when opened).

After the initial panic of thinking I left some type of security hole in the website, a couple of days of looking things over has me somewhat relieved. All of the current protections worked as intended. The most feared abuse is a spambot that can automatically gain access to a form and send out large numbers of emails. This didn’t happen. I also don’t believe email addresses were compromised. It seems that this particular moron just did it manually, or maybe with some automation, but it certainly was not very effective, at least if quantity is important. I didn’t think anyone would be that desperate to go after this relatively small number of people the hard way. But its hard to figure out how an imbecile thinks.

But they did, and I have made some further changes to alleviate the problem. The Alumni Directory E-Mail is back on, but you will have to wait if you want to contact more than one person at-a-time. If you have any problems with it, or get any more of these bogus emails, please let me know.

Spammer

For years spammers have been trying to gain access to this website. There have been thousands of failed attempts of spambots trying to either register at the site or spam any of the forms on the site. Up until now, the built-in protections have worked.

We had our first instance of a spammer actually going to the trouble of writing a program or manually contacting a large number of alumni, which seems like a lot of work for 1850 possible customers. For now, I have disabled the contact form until I find a better solution.

Thanks to everyone who alerted me to the spam emails they received.

I will be closely monitoring the website for more trouble. I will also likely take a look at adding more safeguards to the email form. Thanks for your patience.

Alumni Association of Ontario High School & the Wayne Central School Dinner

The Alumni Association of Ontario High School & the Wayne Central School District is pleased to announce its annual dinner meeting scheduled for Saturday, November 14, 2009. This event is open to anyone who graduated from those schools – regardless of the year. The cost this year is $8 per person, or a $60 lifetime membership which would cover the admission this year for all the alumni in your household. We will be meeting at the Lodge at Casey Park 6551 Knickerbocker Rd. in Ontario, starting at noon. There will be a pot luck meal at 1pm. Please bring a dish to pass and your own table setting. Drinks, cups and napkins will be provided. As always (since 1917), the “brown derby” will go to the graduating class with the most attendees, so contact old classmates & encourage them to help you take the derby home! Also, each year the Association presents a gift to the school and/or the town. If you’re unable to attend this year, please send in $6 annual dues (or lifetime dues) and register so you’ll be sure to get the information about next year’s event. Bring your pictures, and join us for an afternoon of warm memories.
Questions or concerns may be directed to: Chris Wacenske Bray (’72) 315-524-8829 or via e-mail – using “Alumni Association” in the subject area to: Collinsgrama@rochester.rr.com

User Submitted Photo Albums

/mult_form.php

If you have visited the new Photo Albums page, you may have wondered if there was a convenient way to get some of your photos easily uploaded. Now there is. OK, maybe fairly convenient. If you go to this page and follow the directions given, you should be able to upload multiple photos at one time. Logging in is a requirement, otherwise bad people will do bad things. The log in will appear automatically if you are not logged in, and will bring you right to the page once logged in.

This isn’t used for your Bio, though it might be one day. To upload photos to your Bio, continue to use the Upload Photo to Your Bio link.

This new feature is for uploading a group of pictures that will reside in a photo album. This would be a photo album that would appeal to a number of Wayne Alumni. Maybe photos from a Class Reunion, or from the back in school days, etc.

A key element of this capability is naming the Photo Album such that the description will impart enough information that a user can decide to view it. Class year is a good identifier. Or an event name. The only other criteria is that it be a unique name. Right now, this is not checked, so it would be good to add something to the Album Name if it might be a name someone else might choose. Maybe add your initials. Maximum of 100 photos per upload. If you have more, make more than 1 album.

Also on that page, I have instructions on how to resize photos to speed up upload time and viewing time. This is very quick and easy on Windows with a small utility from Microsoft.

You can also access the page using the Upload Photos to an Album link in the Site Menu.

Let me know if you have any problems.

Need More User Photo Uploads

Well its been a few months since the user photo upload feature was added, and though there have been a number of people who have taken advantage of it, it has been at a fairly low rate.

Yes, you can only upload one-at-a-time presently, so this wouldn’t be ideal for a storage area for all your photos, but there is no problem if people upload a couple handfuls of photos.

Yes, you must login first (otherwise bad things will happen), but it is good incentive to finally update your email and get a password if you never have had one.

So I have 11 up there. Who will be the first to surpass me?

It Was 40 Years Ago Today

http://itwas40yearsago.blogspot.com/

This may be interesting to some people, so I’d thought I would highlight it here. My brother Alan has been writing a Blog about the year 1969, and I just found it last night. It combines news and events of the year with some personal recollections. I’m especially looking forward to what he might say about Woodstock, as I’ve really never heard much about his experience there.

I would be happy to highlight and link to others who might be writing a Blog. Just send me an email with the info.

Missing Images

For the past couple of weeks, some people may have been unable to see any images on the website. More likely if you were visiting the website for the first time. Unfortunately, I could not see the problem myself or recreate it, so it was not a easy thing to understand. Anyway, I believe I have determined the cause, and I think I fixed it. So if anyone has trouble seeing images and photos on this site, let me know.

Note to 1987 Alum With Email ben@#####.com

Note to the alum from 1987 who tried to register with the email ben@xxxxx.com, that email got bounced back from the domain saying it was a suspended account or something similar. In order to be activated I need a good email address. You can contact me directly with a better email, and I will make the changes and activate your listing.
