Better Linking to Your Facebook Profile

Edited 2/4/2009 at 6:45 PM

For you Facebook users, I have improved the feature for linking to your Facebook public profile. It isn’t too difficult, but then again, it seems like nothing is ever easy.

It involves three steps:

  1. Ensuring you have allowed Facebook to display a public profile.
  2. Finding out your Public Profile Facebook Name and ID
  3. Updating your Alumni Directory listing to include those two values.

A public profile is different from allowing any Facebook user (non-friend) to see your full profile. It is a setting that allows search engines to find and provide a link to a stripped down version of your profile. It has your name, profile photo, and a list of some of your friends (likely only visible if they have also this setting enabled).

To find out your Public Profile Facebook Name and ID, read this This will explain how to find the info and what you should copy.

To update your listing, click on the Login/Update Listing menu item. You will need to add your Facebook Name and Facebook ID. This ensures that the Facebook icon in your listing will link properly to your public Facebook profile.

Now I have tested this, and it seemed to be OK. But its late, and I may have messed up somewhere. If you have any trouble, let me know.

I have updated my listing if you want to see how it works. display the Class of 1974 in the Alumni Directory, and click on the Facebook Icon in the row for Brian Donovan.

Class of 69 Reunion

/reunions.php

The class of 1969’s 40th reunion will be held Saturday, August 8, 2009 at Burnhams Canalside Hotel( Quality Inn) in Newark, NY.

Cost will be $40 single $75 for two. Rooms are being held at a discount price of $85 per night till July. Phone the Quality Inn at 315-331-9500 for reservations, it’s still the only full service hotel in Wayne County!! Further details will be coming with hopes of Friday night activities too. questions contact Mindy Pellegrino or Carol Royall via the Alumni Directory.

Facebook and MySpace

With the advent of new social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook, it makes websites like waynealumni.org slightly less relevant. Though I have added some features to like photo uploads and contacting classmates without disclosing email addresses, with a part-time unpaid staff of one, and frankly, doesn’t know much about programming, has a hard time keeping up with the features that a site backed by venture capitalists, advertising revenue, and zillions of programmers. It is not a surprise that more recent graduates have a large presence on Facebook and MySpace, and less so here. Overall, they still have less Wayne Central users than we do, but the tide is turning. Hey, even I have a Facebook page.

So what does this mean for this site? Probably not much for now. I may be more inclined to concentrate on things that would be of interest to Wayne Alumni other than “social networking” features. That would be more alumni news, yearbook photos, etc.

I have however, included a place on the Registration form to allow users to indicate whether they have a Facebook or MySpace listing. There is a column in the Alumni Directory that will indicate a Facebook listing with this icon Facebook and a MySpace listing with MySpace. They are linked to those sites, but you will have to search for the user. It’s too complicated to create a link to individuals (at least for now).

Existing users can indicate their own Facebook or MySpace presence by Updating your listing.

Alumni Basketball Game

Hello everyone,

The Wayne Central Basketball Alumni game is set for January 3, 2009 @ 11:30 in the new gym at the high school. Games and teams will be set up similar to last year so there will be time to rest and socialize between games.

There is a $10 donation fee you can pay that day to the Basketball Booster Club and all participants will receive an Alumni Basketball shirt. This donation helps support and improve the girls and boys programs all year!

The pancake breakfast will be held from 8:30-11:00 that morning in the high school cafeteria, tickets are $7 if anyone is interested- please spread the word to family and friends.

Please respond as soon as possible to let us know if you will be joining us. This is helpful so we can have a general idea of teams before game day! Also, PLEASE pass this info along to any other basketball alumni- we have only sent this to people who gave us their email last year- we know there are many others out there who may want to play!

Thank you!
We are looking forward to seeing you all soon.

Some Vintage Photos 74-76

http://www.waynealumni.or…1976/index.html

Here are some photos from around 1974. Includes people from the Classes of 1974-76. Some were from the 74 Senior Trip, maybe 74 Junior Prom, and a birthday party. Thanks to Jackie Monahan who let me borrow the photos.

I especially like the fake alcohol gag gifts in a couple of the photos, because teenagers didn’t drink in the 70’s. And why wasn’t I invited? Never mind.

Giving Back Doesn’t Have To Cost You a Dime!

http://www.wayne.k12.ny.u…/internship.htm

As part of our commitment to excellence in preparing our students for the future, Wayne Central now mandates each student to complete a 40 hour unpaid, career focused internship. This experience allows the students to become directly involved in the workplace setting, apply classroom skills in real world situations and gain a better idea of the type of career they may or may not want to pursue.

In order for this program to be successful we need your help! We are specifically looking for you as alumni, community members and professionals to become mentors for our students. This is your chance to give back to the community, the school and reacquaint yourself with the Wayne Central High School.

As a mentor for the Internship Program you would be required to:

  • Mentor your student at your workplace
  • Jointly establish goals and objectives for the internship
  • Share your expertise
  • Provide a safe working environment
  • Define areas of confidentiality with the intern
  • Complete an evaluation of the intern
  • Keep in contact with the school’s Internship Coordinators

For more information please browse our website at :
www.wayne.k12.ny.us/modelschools/internship.htm

If you are interested in becoming a mentor please contact one of the Internship Coordinators; either Sarah Francis at (315) 524-1185 or sfrancis@wayne.k12.ny.us or Scott Bradley at (315) 524-1183 or sbradley@wayne.k12.ny.us.

Website Notes

Just a couple items about the website:

  • The problem with the new symbol showing up everywhere or else not at all has been fixed. New listings in the last two weeks or so have the new symbol and all future new listings will and then be displayed for 3 weeks.
  • Along with that improvement, updated listings will not be lumped together with new ones. Presently updated listings from today on will have a update symbol displayed for 3 weeks. I’m not listing these together anywhere presently, but may later.
  • A number of users have taken advantage of the Upload Photo feature, and from what I can tell, it appears to be working OK. Send me a message if you experience any difficulties with this feature.
  • Working on a new Message Board feature which I hope to have ready soon. Rather than try to integrate an existing system, which can have some drawbacks, this one will be a rather simple roll-our-own type. Though the message baords never really attracted much use, I thought that one more attempt would be worth it.

You Say It’s Your Birthday

OK, this would have been cooler if it was done a long time ago when most people registered, but better late than never. When you register, or update your listing, there is a place to enter you birthday. Just the month and day (no, not the year. Most of us are trying to forget that at this point).

This is really just for fun. Anyone who has a birthday on any given day will be listed on the main Alumni Directory page. So if someone you know is having a birthday you could send them a birthday greeting. Or maybe someone you haven’t heard from in a while will send you one. But other than people I know pretty closely and anyone who registers from this week on, no one else has a birthday saved right now.

So if you have a password, go ahead and login and add your birthday. If you don’t have a password, try the FAQ page.

Once your birthday is on record, you won’t see the option to set it again which shouldn’t be a problem. If you were born on Feb. 29, all bets are off.

Removing an Uploaded Photo

If you decide that you want to delete a photo you have uploaded, that can now be accomplished. You must be logged in, then access your photos in your listing like you would normally to view them. It is pretty straightforward from there. I will update the FAQ section to hopefully be more informative on how to accomplish some of the tasks dealing with passwords, logging in, uploading photos, etc.

Recent Alumni Photos

/new_photos.php

Since the Photo Upload feature was added a few weeks back, several people have taken advantage of the feature. As it was, you could only get to the photos by browsing the Alumni Directory and finding a listing with the camera icon.

That isn’t too convenient for finding out if there are any new photos, so a couple of ways to see recent Alumni Photos has been implemented.

  1. To see all photos uploaded in the recent past (presently set to one month), click on the Recent Photo Uploads link in the site menu or –
  2. To see who has uploaded photos recently, go to the Alumni Directory Main page, scroll down to the Recent Photo Additions area, and either click on the name of an alumni or click on See All Photos from Last Month

Hopefully this will make this feature a little more user friendly and encourage more alumni to upload some photos!

Safari and Chrome Browser Problems Fixed

NOTE: Safari is Apple’s standard browser with Mac’s, little used with Windows. Chrome is Google’s new web browser and not widely used yet. If you use Internet Explorer or Firefox, this wasn’t causing a problem.

At least that is my hope. I did test using both browsers, and IE and Firefox, and no problems. The issues were with trying to contact someone via the Alumni Directory, but no messages were being sent. The problems were not actually with Safari and Chrome, but with the script that was supposed to make it all happen. As it turns out, I was just lucky it worked with Firefox and IE.

Alumni Association Event

Here is a note from Chris Bray ’72:

September 22, 2008

There were twenty one of us at our annual gathering Saturday.

Graduation years ranged from 1939 to 2006, and we welcomed guests from Virginia and Maine! It should be noted, that the class of 1958 was celebrating a 50th reunion later that night. The weather was perfect, and as usual, the accommodations at Casey Park were excellent. The only thing that could have made it better for me would have been to have even more alumni present for roll call.

We began by looking at some old yearbooks, and scrap books. What a hoot it is to get that “blast from the past”. Our lives have gotten so busy that most of us haven’t taken the time to just sit and reflect on those “dear old golden rule days” in way too long! I can tell you, it’s way more fun when there are others along to giggle with you.

Echo 1972

/pdfs/echo1972.pdf

For some reason I lost my mind for a moment today and scanned the whole 1972 WMS Echo (without a state grant too!). I came up with a process that is much quicker than I have been using in the past. This is a multi-page PDF file, so it is quite large (45MB). But I didn’t take as much time to straighten the pages if they were off slightly, or crop the edges. But I was able to scan the whole thing in a couple of hours. The bad news is, being quite large, it will take a few minutes to download and view, even with a fast connection. So I made a high quality and lower quality versions (the link above is to the higher quality version). The low quality version is about 1/8 the size of the other one.

I erased most of the signings, left a couple by some teachers (like the late Mr. MacDonald).

Thanks to Linda Bell (and Greg Bell, though he doesn’t know it) for use of the yearbook.

Higher Quality (slower) – Lower quality (but faster)

You need Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer (free). If you don’t have it, search on that name.

I have some more Echo’s here, I might try some more, time permitting.

Alumni Soccer Games

Date: Saturday, September 20th, 2008

Time:

  • Women’s Alumni Game- 9am-10:30
  • Men’s Alumni Game – 10:30am-Noon

Place: Porray Field (Varsity Soccer Field) Weather permitting Hope for good weather.

Cost: Donations towards the soccer program would be greatly appreciated. We are also planning on trying to begin an alumni association, which would be a group of former alumni and our first thing we would do each year would be to pick a team MVP and possibly give out a small scholarship.

Following each game food will be provided/cooked.

Each of you will also be given a ticket to get into the homecoming games that evening.

The game schedule for the school teams on Saturday is

  • 1pm- JV Girls
  • 3pm-JV Boys
  • 5pm- Varsity Girls
  • 7pm- Varsity Boys

We would also like to announce those in attendance during halftime, so please be sure to stick around, if you would like.

Both the boys and girls teams have been working hard this year and would like to see some of the individuals who put Wayne Soccer on the map in attendance so plan on making a day of it and supporting the current teams.

If you have any questions or ideas for the day please feel free to email me back. Also, I would like to get an approximate number of who will be there, so if you could get back to me and let me know if you will be there that would be great.

Thanks,

Jay Marino

Norm McGowan OHS ’40

https://waynealumni.org/basketball/hist1938.htm

Sad to hear that Norm McGowan OHS Class of 1940 has died. Norm was on the Ontario High School Section V Champion basketball team along with his brother Bob.

I nominated his brother Bob McGowan to be in the Section V Basketball Hall of Fame a few years ago. Though Bob had passed I thought it would be nice if his brother and teammate was there at the induction. Unfortunately the committee has apparently not felt Bob’s accomplishments were Hall of Fame worthy.

Bob McGowan left, Norm McGowan right. The other guy is reporter Don Hassett.

Issues with Safari and Chrome Browsers

If you have an Apple computer and run the Safari browser, or have downloaded the new Google Chrome browser for Windows, some of the features of this website don’t work at the present time. Specifically something that uses a Contact form like trying to contact a classmate using the Alumni Directory.

It seems to work OK with Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera. Hopefully there will be a solution found in the near future. Until then, one could download Firefox here if you would like to utilize these features.

I will post here when it is fixed.
