[DENVER] The Numismatic Literary Guild (NLG) has presented its highest honor to Barbara J. Gregory (Class of ’72), editor-in-chief of NUMISMATIST, the American Numismatic Association’s (ANA) monthly magazine. Awarded on August 17, 2006, during the ANA World’s Fair of Money®, the coveted “Clemy” annually recognizes an individual who embodies the attributes of Clement Bailey, an NLG founder who was known for his literary talent and sense of humor.
The 39th recipient and 6th woman so honored by the NLG, Gregory joined the NUMISMATIST staff in 1981 and was appointed editor in 1988 by the ANA Board of Governors. She is the first woman to hold the title in the magazine’s 119-year history, tying ANA founder George F. Heath for the second-longest tenure in the position.
A 1972 graduate of Wayne Central High School and a 1976 graduate of Alfred University in Alfred, New York, Gregory earned a bachelor’s degree in English. She worked as a medical illustrator and editor at the University of Rochester (NY) before moving to Colorado Springs. She has received the ANA’s Presidential Award and in 2004 was named a Numismatic Ambassador by NUMISMATIC NEWS, a national hobby publication. That same year, Alfred University presented her an Alumni Citation for Distinctive Career Achievements and Avocational Pursuits.
