2020 Wayne Soccer Hall of Fame Inductees

From Wayne Soccer Alumni:
Normally this time of year, the school teams are in full swing and we are preparing for our annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony. This fall season will be much different as there will be a very different look to our shortened season that will include limited fans. Therefore, we will not have a homecoming or a Hall of Fame ceremony this fall, but we still are honoring our 2020 Induction Class. THEY WILL FORMALLY BE INDUCTED NEXT FALL (2021), but we wanted to make people aware of who was selected to be in this year’s Hall of Fame Class. This year we would like to honor:

  • Nikki Albright (Sanchez)
  • Ron Bradstreet
  • Shana Dehn (Jordan)
  • Al Granger
  • Jamey Loucks
  • Cindy VanHoover
  • Bob Witt
  • Leighana Woody (Krzyzanowski)

8th Grade Landscaping Crew

This is now a 50 year old event, so my memory is a bit fuzzy on some of the details. If you were there, feel free to comment or let us know you were there.

Probably in the fall of 1969 or spring of 1970, a group of boys from the 8th grade (class of 1974) in TC Armstrong Middle School, were asked to take part in a field trip. I can’t remember how many, 8-20 maybe? I can’t recall any classmate specifically who helped. We had to bring a lunch and we would miss classes, which sounded fine to most of us. I don’t remember if we rode in a bus or in cars, but the task they wanted us to do was dig up some pine trees and re-plant them behind the A-wing at the middle school. I guess it came under the category as “science”.

I don’t know how this started, probably as a conversation in the teachers lounge, but what I recall, we went to the home of Mr. MacDonald’s (a sixth grade teacher there) Mother, or Aunt in Wallington (Sodus) , where there were what seemed pretty large pine trees (taller than us) that we were to dig up, such that they could be transplanted. There were at least two, maybe four we dug up, which took quite some effort and time as I recall.

But when we finally finished, we had to re-plant them behind the school. The middle school was only a couple years old then, and had no trees or anything around it. So we dug some holes and re-planted them. It may have been a two day affair, not sure. We also didn’t obviously do all the work. Some number of teachers were helping, and maybe some other school staff.

Though my kids all went there, I don’t recall paying much attention at that time about those trees. So I checked Google Maps, and I can’t say for certain, but at least one of the trees looks like it could be a pine and about where I remember we put them.

Seemed appropriate that the class of 74 was involved, as we first occupied the school as sixth graders, before it was finished. No gym, no cafeteria, no other classes were there in the fall of 1967. If none of those trees survived, I’m sure we left a few other marks!

No One Has Topped This Yet

This was one of my favorite submissions I received during my years of doing this. William Thurston, Class of 1977, sent me this photo many years ago from the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. I wish it was a little bigger, but he had his Eagles pennant with him for a photo!

At 19,308 feet, it would be hard to top literally or figuratively. I never got to thank him in person, but when I came across this photo today it made me smile.

Class of 1966 – Wayne Soccer Hall of Fame Inductions 2019

From Dan Doyle

Congratulations to Russ Hanks and John Serafine on being elected into the Wayne Central Soccer Hall of Fame.  This year’s nominating committee has chosen one defensive player and one offensive player.  They join Arthur Capers (2016) and Dave Johnville (2018).

Voted to be one of our senior Co-Captains, Russ led the team both on and off the field. Motivated and resourceful, with a game plan to take on any offensive player or advancement.   In constant communication with the other defensive players.  A goalie’s friend when it came to corner kicks.   A heavy foot to move the ball up field.  Could easily give encouragement when we won or make suggestions for improvements when we lost.

Jocko played center line, a complex pressure position he loved.  A team player, who excelled when competing against the other team’s defense and goalie, using skill, trickery and determination. Physically capable of running long distances.  Always with an encouraging word when other teammates were down.

Both were good sports when losing and fun people to be with when riding the Victory Team Bus back to the high school.  Both involved in other sports and extracurricular activities during school years. Russ has been a mentor and soccer coach in the Albany, NY area.  Jocko enjoys golf at The Villages in Florida.

Fifty-four years ago, both gave their best efforts to make us champions.  Their dedication and hard work during games brought cheers from our coach, teammates and spectators.   We are proud to call them friends.  Congratulations!

Updated – GoFundMe for Website Operating Costs

The goal was reached in less than 24 hours. I’m happy we have 4 new sponsors and we are all set for 3 more years.

Thanks to Greg Kline, Kathy Hecht Langdon, Karen Southworth, and Mark and Caryn (Campbell) Devlin.

3 years ago I intended to discontinue the website, but had a number of requests to keep it going, so I found a new hosting service that offered a good deal for a 3 year plan, and had a short GoFundMe campaign to help with costs.

The 3 years is up soon, and though the new customer deal is no longer available, at a little under $8 / month, it’s not bad. Definitely not worth changing hosting service, as the one we use is one of the highest rated, and it is a major PITA to change. I will continue to cover the domain name registration cost myself, which is something under $20/year.

Since I self-funded the website for many years I am attempting to raise some money to allow the website to be available for 3 more years. Some of the details are in the link, but just trying to raise $250. The money goes to me personally, as I pay the bill. I will stop the campaign as soon as the goal is met.

Thanks to the sponsors for the last 3 years:

  • Carla Tarana Boerman
  • Gary Foos
  • Cheryl Bamford Conte
  • Diana Mattuzzi
  • Kathy Doyle Hearn

Thanks for the support.
