FAREWELL, FRANKIE

FAREWELL, FRANKIE

By Daniel May, Class of ‘76

As a lifelong sports fan who graduated from Wayne Central High School in 1976, I grew to maturity freshly familiar with a quote famously (if erroneously) attributed to Vince Lombardi—
“Winning isn’t everything… it’s the ONLY thing.”
This week I join friends and family to pause and remember a great man who long ago taught me otherwise— a legendary sports figure at my high school named Frankie Urbanik.
Throughout his life, Frankie overcame his apparent disadvantages in order to attend as many Wayne Central sporting events as he could. And by energetically rooting for Wayne Central’s sports teams— living and dying with every late-game penalty kick and fourth-quarter free throw— Frankie taught us, paradoxically, that there is more to the game than the game itself.
Whether his beloved Wayne Central teams won or lost, Frankie’s enthusiasm and attendance remained constant; no matter what the outcome, he was always there at the next game. After a tough loss, he provided living proof that the world doesn’t cease revolving because of a single setback; and after savoring a delicious victory, Frankie’s inevitable return to the bleachers reminded us that life is an unending sequence of worthy and difficult challenges to be met.
Most importantly, perhaps, for decades Frankie helped Wayne Central fans and athletes alike become better human beings by earning their respect, admiration, and affection by the way he lived his life. He was a wonderful example who has taught us all to recognize the valuable wisdom and dignity of our “special needs” brothers and sisters, sons and daughters. As such,Frankie was as valuable a component of a Wayne Central education as any tenured teacher or career administrator.
This is how I shall forever remember Frankie— as the unlikeliest of Wayne Central teachers, yet one who taught me so many valuable lessons that remain with me today.
I have many fond memories of Frankie, all relating to sports. He and I had a standing date for one-on-one basketball at lunchtime my senior year. It became something of a daily sideshow, and small crowds would actually gather to watch. It must’ve made Frankie feel good to be a player instead of a spectator, and he wasn’t above hamming it up for his audience. If a pretty girl was watching, Frankie would pause and earnestly “dedicate” the game to her. When he missed a short basket, Frankie would sometimes pound the nearest wall in theatrical angst. I don’t remember any of the scores… who won and who lost… but in retrospect I’d say we both came out on top.
It was easy for many of us to underestimate Frankie. One situation in particular taught me not to.
The Buffalo Bills were a borderline playoff contender in 1975, with O.J. Simpson still rumbling for all-pro yardage and a promising young quarterback named Joe Ferguson under center. The Bills were cruising to victory one Sunday that season when Ferguson suddenly went down with an injury. In came his even younger backup Gary Marangi, and the game slowly slipped away as the Buffalo offense sputtered and misfired. On the following Monday we all did our usual armchair analysis, but then out of nowhere Frankie chimed in— “Marangi’s a good quarterback,”Frankie insisted. “But he came in cold, and his cadence is different from Ferguson’s. It messed up the Bills’ timing at the line of scrimmage.” We were all stunned— it was a take worthy of Tony Romo himself. Frankie knew his stuff.
I moved away from Ontario in 1976 and didn’t return for over 30 years. My wife and I went to a Wayne Central basketball game in 2010… how everything had changed! The building was much bigger, the cheerleaders were all texting instead of watching the game… but there was Frankie, sitting court-side as always, but now in his wheelchair. It didn’t take him long to recognize me and recall our silly basketball games. Soon thereafter a couple of friends and I set up the“Frankie Urbanik Fan Page” on Facebook. Within a few short weeks his online following had swelled to nearly a thousand… several generations of Wayne Eagles who loved Frankie and recalled him fondly.
And now Frankie’s passing once again reminds us that life is finite… that every great athlete eventually comes face-to-face with Father Time… every great coach has to make that agonizing final stroll from the fields of friendly strife… and every great teacher has to bid a final farewell to the classroom where he imparted so much wisdom on impressionable young minds.
Dear Frankie, you’ve now been called home to your Creator after a life so beautifully lived.Thank you for sharing it with those of us fortunate enough to have known you… thank you for your dedication, for your enthusiastic and steadfast support, for all the lessons you taught us, for your devilish, contagious joy… and for making us laugh with you. As we mourn your passage and say farewell, we do so knowing that your unique legacy will surely outlive all of us and provide an excellent example to future Wayne Central students, athletes, and fans.
Winning might not be everything… but if our life’s box score is based on what we contribute to the world and the people around us, then you’re going out a winner, Frankie.

1970 Eagle

I scored a 1970 Eagle on eBay and got it today to add to my small collection.  When I get one of these, I always wonder who owned it originally.  No names, no other signings.  Oh well, sounds like something I would do.

I hope to get at least some of this scanned and posted on the website.  Though it may not be quick as I’ll probably have to spend night late nights to find the time.  But what a great group of Wayne Alumni!

Lieutenant Robert S. Witt

I was thinking about one of my neighbors growing up on N. Slocum Road.  Bob was 8 years older than me, and a year older than my oldest brother, Tom.  He graduated from Wayne in 1966.

I had just started my new job and heard about this on the radio, and recall exactly where I was that day in September 1976. He was not a crew member on this flight, just catching a ride to another base, as were many of the passengers. Another fatality on this flight was from Marion, NY. Bob had a young wife and children, was just getting started in life and probably was headed for a long career in the Air Force. I found this image of a memorial that someone has erected near the crash site at a remote area in eastern Michigan.

I’ll always remember him as the big brother of the neighborhood.

Wayne Alumni in Pro Sports

In addition to being a good basketball player, Chris Collins also played pro soccer in the NASL with the Dallas Tornadoes and in the MISL

He was among the initial inductees in to the Wayne Central Soccer Hall of Fame.  There were no All Greater Rochester teams selected for soccer in 1974.

Info and a few more photos in the link:

If there are other alumni who played pro sports, please send me info!

Blankenberg 2018 AGR 1st Team Selection

Congratulations to Logan Blankenberg for being a 2018 First Team selection in the D & C All Greater Rochester basketball team.

There was a mistake in their write-up however.  It was not the first time a Wayne player was selected to the first team.  Chris Collins was a first team selection in 1974.

I pointed out the error to the authors and the Wayne Athletic director.

Wayne Boys Basketball in Sectional Finals

Wayne defeated HF-L in the Class A2 semi-finals Wednesday night and will play NE-Douglas for the Class A2 Championship Saturday March 3 , 12 PM at the Blue Cross Arena.  Check the website for any updates.

Wayne has a chance to repeat as champions after winning Wayne’s first ever last season.

2017 Wayne Soccer Alumni Hall of Fame Inductees

(October 19, 2017) – Five years ago the Wayne Soccer Alumni started a hall of fame to capture the storied history of our soccer program which has included a combined 11 sectional championships and over 35 league titles between the boys and girls programs. This year six new members were inducted into the hall of fame. The inductees are: Mike Corney, Roger Hansen, Bob Hollis, Christine Ingham (Barnsdale), Lisa Lombino and Lonnie Schilstra.

Mike Corney played for Wayne from 1976-1978. He was a captain and a 3-year all-county midfielder. After high school, he was a 4-year starter for Lock Haven, where they won the 1980 Division 2 National Championship. After college, Mike played professionally and represented the US in China in 1987. Currently, Mike is a coach for the US Soccer Academy Classics in Pennsylvania and has retired after being a teacher for 30 years.

Roger Hansen played for Wayne from 1969 until 1971 and was on two sectional title winning teams in 1969 and 1970. Roger’s involvement in soccer spans over 50 years as a player, coach, team administrator and referee. Roger has played in over 600 games and officiated over 900. He currently is still involved in soccer as a referee for both college and high school.

Bob Hollis was a three year starter for Wayne and was on three league and sectional winning teams and was captain his senior season. Bob was a midfielder that controlled the field while scoring goals and getting assists. Bob was not only an offensive threat, but was a fierce defender as well, as he was part of one of strongest defending teams in Wayne history.

Christine Ingham (Barnsdale) was the captain of the 1991 sectional title winning team. Her senior season Christine was 1st team all-league, senior MVP and exceptional senior nominee and a 6th team all-state selection. In addition to winning the sectional title, the girl’s team was also league champions in her senior season. After high school, Christine was recruited to play at Fredonia State University where she was a 4-year starter.

Lisa Lombino was a teammate of fellow Hall of Fame inductee Christine Ingham (Barnsdale) and was part of the 1991 Sectional and league winning teams. On top of being an all-league selection and team MVP, Lisa was also selected 1st team All Greater Rochester. Her senior season Lisa scored 9 goals for the Section V Class B winning team. After high school, Lisa went on to play 3 years for Buffalo State University.

Lonnie Schilstra was a graduate of the class of 1964. His senior season Lonnie was the captain of the Section V championship team. Lonnie not only excelled on the soccer field, he was also on the basketball and baseball teams. While in high school, Lonnie also was very involved in the music program, participating in Senior Band, Pep Band, and all state band. Following his playing days at Wayne, he went on to play soccer for Ithaca College where he was a starter. Lonnie went on to teach for 33 years in Penfield Schools.

Yearbook Picture of the Week

I had the pleasure of hanging out with a few of the old folks from the Class of 1973 a couple weeks ago, and Pat Runne was telling a story of an interesting event he was involved in many years ago.  He mentioned several names of people he was with, and I recognized all of the names. Then he said John Benefield, and I thought to myself, wait I know that name.  It is a name I probably haven’t heard of thought of in over 40 years and I couldn’t remember who it was.  Not wanting to interrupt Pat during his story, I tried to remember for a couple minutes but then gave up.

Next day, I was doing something and all of a sudden John Benefield’s face popped into my head.  Not sure why I didn’t remember the night before, but probably just because it had been so long.  He was maybe two years ahead of me, and I think I can recall him from back in elementary school, as he threw a dodge ball like Nolan Ryan.

Anyway, this was the only picture I could find of him in any high school yearbook I have.  Wonder where he is today.

Looking For Alumni to Post Site Content

Sorry for the lack of new posts the last few months, just been awfully busy. I’m still looking for people who might want to create and add content occasionally for this site. It is quite simple using the system we have in place. I would just have to provide logins and probably point you to a short video on how to use it (if you’d even need it).

This is the type of content that would be nice to have people contribute:

  • Alumni News – can be just about anything of interest to all or some sub-group of alumni
  • Photos – same thing, yearbooks, reunions, old photos, etc
  • School History – if anyone would like to author some articles about school history that could appear sporadically, that would be nice
  • Sports – occasional reports on current school teams
  • What’s New at the Schools – how things have changed

If anyone is interested, you can contact me (minus spaces) at: b d o n o v a 1 (at) r o c h e s t e r . r r . c o m

Original Eagles to play the Not So Original Eagles

The real Wayne Eagles (since 1950) play the Irondequoit Eagles (since a few years ago, how original – and Class A1 Champs) Wednesday March 8 at 8:15 PM at Victor High School.  The winner will represent Section V Class A in the NYS Tournament.

I guess it’s OK to use the same nickname if it’s more than 5 miles away.

Wayne Boys Win Class A2 Section V Championship!!!!

Though Ontario High School won a couple championships prior to the formation of the Wayne Central School District in 1950, the boys basketball program has never been able to win a Section V Championship, UNTIL NOW!

Wayne Boys defeated Wilson -Magnet School 50-43 at Fairport High School today to bring home a Section V trophy.

Wayne Players on All-Tournament Team:

  • Logan Blankenburg
  • Billy Thomson
  • Braeden Zenelovic – Tournament MVP
