Wayne Wrestling

The very complete Wayne Wrestling website has gone away. Before it disappeared, I was able to save a bit of info relating to Wayne Wrestling history. Unfortunately, I did not get most of the team photos. I have some yearbooks, so I should be able to get some.
Thanks to the Wayne Wrestling boosters for assembling this information and organizing the Hall of Fame. I don’t know who specifically, but I communicated with Matt Prinsen in years past. I believe Matt was mainly responsible for the original Wayne Wrestling website.

2011
Mike Patterson
Class of 2003
3 Time Class B Sectional Champion; 2X Section 5 Champion, 2X NYS runner-up. Mike’s record his last two years of high school was an outstanding 96 – 3. I had the privilege of watching Mike throughout his outstanding high school and college career and can attest to his commitment, toughness, athleticism, intelligence, and all around “class” as an athlete and person.  As an 8th grader, Mike struggled against more mature wrestlers, gaining experience that would suit him well as he dominated Section 5 and New York state over the latter part of his career. Mike’s wrestling style was as tough and physically dominant as it was possible to be while, at the same time, he was one of the most personable young men that I coached. Mike, an outstanding student, earned his degree from SUNY Binghamton and is enjoying a successful career in private industry.

Mike’s college career was, to me, a demonstration of not just his ability to compete at the Division I level, but a demonstration of his commitment to his family. Despite battling thru several serious injuries that would have caused a lesser individual to call it a career, Mike stepped on the mat against the top guys in the nation, serving as a leader of his team and competing with his brothers one last time. (by Scott Freischlag)

2009
Leo Urbinelli, MD

Leo is the son of Romeo and Marilyn Urbinelli. While at Wayne Leo was a 3X Class B Sectional champion and a Section 5 champion; Upon graduation, Leo held the school record for career wins with a 154 wins and 21 losses (most of those pins were with his infamous cross-face cradle!)

While at Cornell: Leo’s honors included: being named to the All Ivy team, serving as team captain, 2X NYS College Champion, 2X NCAA qualifier – reaching the All American round. In addition, Leo earned team awards for most pins, most valuable wrestler, and toughness.

Leo recently graduated from SUNY Upstate Medical Center and is a surgical resident in the combined general surgery – plastic surgery program at NYU.

2009
Brian Swedrock

Brian is the son of Rosie and John Swedrock. While at Wayne Brian was a 3X Class B Sectional champion and a Section 5 Champion with a career record of 90 – 14, a team captain with extensive freestyle and Greco roman experience.

In addition to being a four year member of the wrestling team at Cornell; Brian was introduced to Olympic style power lifting; he has been a nationally ranked competitor in that sport for the past 10 years (he’s gone from all of 75 pounds as an 8th grader to being able to put almost 300 pounds over his head!)

Brian was also honored as member of the wrestling team for achieving a 4.0 GPA during the wrestling season. Brian graduated with honors with a degree in Applied Economics and Business.

Currently  Brian resides in Connecticut with his wife and daughter where he works as a senior portfolio administrator

In addition to winning the Penfield, Spencerport, and Bradshaw tournaments, Roy was a county and league champion. Roy became the first wrestler from Wayne to win a sectional tournament, qualifying for the New York State tournament and taking 4th place as a senior. Roy was also the first Wayne wrestler to amass 100 career wins in an era when most wrestlers had about 20 – 25 matches in a season. Please join us in congratulating Mr. Roy Lang on his induction into the Wayne wrestling Hall of Fame.

2004
DAWSON RAYMO

The Wayne Central Wrestling Program proudly presents Dawson Raymo the award for his contributions to the Wayne Wrestling Program.
After being a four time sectional champion at Messina HS, Mr. Dawson Raymo came to Wayne in 1970 and served the district as a teacher and as the Wayne head wrestling coach for 10 years. During that time the wrestling program experienced a growth in popularity that laid the foundation for the program that we have today. Coach established the youth wrestling program at Wayne, recruiting many young athletes into the sport.
Coach Raymo coached many outstanding wrestlers, including Coach Ted Hargarther. Coach also coached many of Wayne’s outstanding sets of brothers;  the Affronti’s, the Lang’s, the Azzano’s, as well as countless other fine wrestlers.
Upon his retirement from teaching, Coach went on to a successful business career. Please join us in congratulating Coach Dawson Raymo on his induction into the Wayne Wrestling Hall of Fame.

2003
RON MILLER

The Wayne Central Wrestling Program proudly presents Mr. Ronald E. Miller the award for being one of the greatest contributors to the Wayne Wrestling Program and to the Wayne Central School District. Ronald E. Miller was born in Montgomery, Pa. on July 11, 1941, where he attended school and graduated from Montgomery High School in 1959. He enrolled in Bloomsburg State College, in Pennsylvania, and graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. His major was in Social Studies and his minor was in Geography.  His graduate studies include courses taken at Bloomsburg, Oswego, Brockport, and the University of Rochester. In September of 1963, Mr. Miller began his career at Wayne Central to teach social studies. He also coached wrestling for five years, from 1964-1969, served as Senior Class Advisor, and was a Student Council Advisor. He became vice-principal in 1969 and served in that capacity for eighteen years. In 1987, he became principal of the high school and remained in that position for ten years.  Ron left Wayne in 1997 to serve as vice principal and principal of Jersey Shore High School until 2003 (this year), when he decided to retire. Ron Miller always wanted to show his support for the students at Wayne Central by attending as many events as he could in order to compliment them on their athletic and academic achievements.

2003
AL GENTILE

The Wayne Central Wrestling Program proudly presents Mr. Al Gentile the award for being one of the greatest contributors to the Wayne Wrestling Program and to the Wayne Central School District.  Mr. Al Gentile founded the wrestling program at Wayne in 1950 after the boys were interested in starting a boxing team.  Practice was held on the Ontario Primary stage, but band practice interfered.  To remedy this situation, practice had to be held in the Walworth School.  Coach Gentile had his wrestlers run alongside his car, which had the mats strapped onto it, for 6 miles through all of the weather! The JV program was formed during the 1950-1951 season, and the following season they entered the varsity level.  Coach Gentile saw success come early with many individual section winners.  One year, six out of 10 wrestlers won the sectionals!!  Finally, Al Gentile decided to turn to officiating and turned the program over to Mr. Ron Miller. Other achievements of Al Gentile include coaching numerous champions including Olympic wrestler Carmen Molino.  In 1975-1982, Al Gentile was selected to work five State Wrestling Champion Tournaments.  In 1982, he was honored by the NYSHSAA as the #1 Wrestling Referee in New York State and was inducted into the Section Five Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1996.

2002
CARMEN J. MOLINO

The Wayne Central Wrestling Program proudly presents Mr. Carmon J. Molino the award for being one of the greatest contributors to the Wayne Wrestling Program and to the Wayne Central School District. An outstanding wrestler for Cornell University during his three varsity seasons from 1955 to 1958, he compiled an overall mark of 25-7 and was undefeated in Ivy League matches (18-0). He was runner-up at 125 pounds at the Eastern Intercollegiate championships in 1958 and reached the semis of the NCAA championships. In 1960 he won the National AAU 125-lb. title, was runner-up in 1961 and placed fourth in 1962. He was named the outstanding wrestler of the prestigious Wilkes Open Tournament in 1959. He placed sixth in the World Freestyle championships in 1961. He was a member of the U.S. Greco Roman teams in 1962 and 1963 and the U.S. freestyle team in 1961. In 1964, he was runner-up in the U.S. Olympic Trials and was an alternate U.S. Olympic team member. Since graduation from Cornell, Molino has taught at Groton (N.Y.) High School and was Groton’s head wrestling coach from 1960-66. He was an assistant coach at Cornell from 1967-72 and from 1974-92.
