FINE SEASON FOR GIRLS
Sparked by the scoring of senior Cyndi Zahos, sophmore Karen Wheeler and juniors Cindy Granger and Shelia Gordinier, Wayne’s girl’s soccer team turned a 1977 losing season (5-10-1) into a fine winning season (12-7-1) in 1978.
Cyndi & Karen each had 13 goals while Cindy Granger had 11 and Shelia 7. Debbie Buyze scored four times, Molly Perry twice and Kathy Doyle once.
Karen Wheeler lead the team in assists with nine, while Cyndi Zahos had six, Debbie Buyze five, Cindy Granger and Molly Perry three each and Sue Doyle, Shelia Gordinier and Dorothy Fitzgerald had one each.
The team scored 45 goals in the regular season for an average of 2.65 goals per game. They averaged 23.4 shots on goal per game and averaged 34 shots on the goal during Sectionals.
After finishing second to Pal-Mac in league play, the girls had a fine Sectional record, winning three of four games, losing only to powerful Pittsford-Sutherland in the finals.
They won a 2-2 game with Attica on penetration time as Cindy Granger and Karen Wheeler each scored a goal and an assist, beat Honeoye Falls-Lima 3-2 with Cyndi Zahos scoring twice and Debbie Buyze once and toppled Wayland 4-0 on two goals by Sheila Gordinier, one each by Cyndi Zahos and Cindy Granger, and four assists by Karen Wheeler before falling to Pittsford-Sutherland 3-0 in the finals.
Congratulations to Kathy Doyle and Karen Wheeler on being named to the Wayne County All-Star team. Kathy, a senior, had great movement and an excellent foot in her fullback position, while Karen, a sophmore, was one of the fastest and most talented players in the league and scored 13 goals and assisted on nine others form her wing postion.
DOYLE, BUYZE GET GIRLS’ SOCCER HONORS
Wayne Girls’ Varsity Soccer team, coached by Pat Yates, was another of the big reasons Wayne had such a successful fall season. The girls got off to a slow start, losing their first three games and then veteran goalie Sue Fekishazy for five games but cam back strong to capture second place in the B league and third place in the county.
They beat three good Sectional foes before bowing to Pittsford-Sutherland in the finals. IT WAS THE FIRST WAYNE GIRLS’ SOCCER TEAM TO EVER REACH THE FINALS IN SECTIONAL PLAY!!!
There were only three seniors on the team and one of those, Lisa Spencer, was laid up most of the season with knee problems. The other two, Kathy Hoyle and Cyndi Zahos, were picked by theri teammates as co-captains.
Four sophmores – Karen Wheeler, Crissy Aman, Shannon Helfer and Beth McLaughlin- all made important contributions to the team.
When Sue Fekishazy was injured, Beth McLaughlin came up from the Jayvee to fill in and the team won four of five games with her in goal.
The team had an overall record of 12-7-1 and scored 61 goals to 44 for their opponents. Cyndi Zahos was the top scorer with 10 goals in league play and three in the Sectionals. and added six assists. karen Wheeler had nine goals in league, two in Sectioanls and had three assists. Shelia Gordinier had five in league, two in Sectionals and lead the team in assists with seven. Debbie Buyze had four goals and four assists from her halfback position.
Kathy Doyle and Karen Wheeler were chosen to the county all-star team and both finished with the second most highest total points for the backfield and line positions.
The coach praised Sue Fekishazy for her fine work after recovering from her injury as she only allowed 21 goals in the last 13 games. She also thanked Barb Simpson for a great job as scorekeeper and manager and also the varsity cheerleaders for cheering at their final Sectional game.
Coach Yates had little trouble picking her MOST VALUABLE PLAYER but the MOST IMPROVED wasn’t quite so easy as many of the girls showed improvement. Picked by the opposing coaches as one of the top defensive backs in the league, Kathy Doyle’s great work in front of the goal and her long kicks easily made her the outstanding player on the team. The most improved player did not play much her first year, and this year as a junior, Debbie Buyze, play grew both offensively and defensively from her fullback position and deserved the honor. Both received trophies.
Kathy and Karen Wheeler also received their all-star awards and all team members received awards for making the finals of the Sectional.
