Jay Marino
Jay is being inducted into the Wayne Soccer Hall of Fame as both a player for his efforts on the field and a contributor for his efforts in helping start and manage the Wayne Soccer Alumni Association over the last 12 years. As a player Jay played 4 years of varsity soccer, and was known as a speedy forward with one speed only…fast…Jay started for 4 years for Wayne Central, each year earning all league honors including 1st team his junior and senior years. In addition to all league honors, Jay was All Greater Rochester 1st team his senior year, being named 1 of the top 14 players in the Rochester Area.
During his junior season he helped his team win their 1st Wayne County league title in over a decade leading the team with 16 goals. During his senior season his team won their 1st ever Finger Lakes East title and Jay led the team with 14 goals and 8 assists, while earning team MVP honors. Throughout his 4 years on varsity his team’s record was 55-15-4. Jay finished his career with 44 goals and 24 assists. After high school Jay continued his athletics at St. John Fisher College playing 4 years and appeared in over 60 games, totaling 18 goals and 6 assists. Jay has also coached in the Wayne boys soccer program for 18 years, as an assistant for 16, JV coach for 1 and this year being named the head coach, taking over for legendary coach Tim Mattle.
As a contributor, one of Jay’s most proud accomplishments is helping to start the Wayne Soccer Alumni Association which honors alumni through the Wayne Soccer Hall of Fame. In creating the alumni association, numerous Wayne Soccer Alum have come together to celebrate their accomplishments on and off the field. Through his efforts, the alumni association gives back in numerous ways to the community and current teams, such as varsity player of the game awards, Annual Alumni Scholarship, alumni soccer games, and their annual Alumni golf tournament.
Jay is in his 17th year teaching Social Studies at Wayne Central HS. He would like to thank his wife, kids, parents and brother and sister-in-law for their continued support over the years.
