The Eagles made a game out of it against the number one seeded team. The Knights pulled out to a 5 – 0 lead, but Wayne came back to tie it up with a 3 pointer and a 2 pointer from Greene. Wayne had a chance to tie it to end the quarter, but ended up losing the ball and PS scored to make it 11 – 7 after one. In the second quarter Wayne kept it close the first four minutes. Todd O’Dell had a 3 pointer and a FG coming off the bench for Jay Greene who had 3 fouls. Lester also had a 3 pointer, with VanWagner putting in two points and Marrero and Sass combining for 3 FTs. But the Knights went on a run to end the half with a 30- 20 lead.
In the 3rd quarter, things went about the same. P-S was hitting from the outside and Wayne was losing ground too them. Luis Marrero had a 3 pointer and 8 points in the quarter, with Bauer adding a FG and Mike Sass contributing two FTs. In the fourth, Wayne went on a charge, getting within 4 points at 57 – 53. Marrero, Sass, and Lester had 3 pointers to help the effort. Tim Bauer added 2 FGs, with Mike Sass also getting 2 buckets with some nice rebounding.
The run ended when Marrero grabbed a rebound after a P-S missed shot and was called for the foul. It looked as though the call would go against P-S, as Marrero grabbed the ball out of the air and was hit as he and the player went for the loose ball, but as the stunned Wayne players looked on, P-S went to the FT line. At best it was a no call situation as both players went close to straight up for the ball. Wayne had a couple of opportunities to narrow the margin but missed the 3 point attempts at the end. All in all, a great effort for the team to keep in the game and make the strong comeback in the fourth quarter, always putting in maximum effort.
I don’t usually complain about the referees, they have a tough job and I wouldn’t want to do it, but one of the refs didn’t seem like he wanted to blow the whistle against Pittsford Sutherland. One example was when Luis Marrero was cross body blocked on an inbounds pass and he lost control of the ball and it went out-of-bounds right in front of the ref. No call on the push, but he knew who touched it last. Maybe it was Michael Jordan syndrome, I don’t know. He wasn’t shy about blowing it against Wayne, as Greene and Bauer both had to sit after some questionable calls. No excuses though, it probably wouldn’t would have made the difference. And not to take anything away from Pittsford Sutherland either, you can see why they’re one of the best in Section 5. Valenti and Williams are an impressive duo. Valenti had 29 points.
Congratulations on a fine and memorable season. Good luck to the seniors in whatever you pursue in the future.

Wayne 68 – Pittsford Mendon 63
Record 12 – 9
Marrero -14 pts
Lester – 10 pts
Greene – 13 pts
Bauer – 22 pts
Sass – 5 pts
O’Dell – 4 pts
The first half was tight the whole way, neither team getting more than a few point lead. It was 9 – 9 after one with Lester putting in 2 FG with Greene and Marrero each with one. In the second, Jay Greene had 8 points, Tim Bauer 6 with Lester and O’Dell 2 each. It was 29 – 29 at the half.
Wayne finally carved out at lead in the 3rd quarter. Mike Sass hit a 3 pointer to start it off. Tim Bauer had 2 buckets and two FTs, Luis Marrero also had 2 baskets. Todd O’Dell and Jay Greene each had 2 points as Wayne led 46 – 38 after three. Wayne shot well from the foul line all night, but in the fourth, the Eagles put in 12 points from the free throw line. Tim Bauer had 10 points, Marrero 6, Lester 4, and Sass 2 in the quarter. Only one three pointer the entire game for Wayne vs. several from Pittsford Mendon as it kept them in the game, but Wayne had good inside play with 10 blocks from Bauer and Jay Greene sent back a few.
On to Pittsford Mendon Friday night at 7PM to play # 1 seed Pittsford Sutherland. Yes, that’s right – the game is at the school of the team we just defeated. Apparently Pittsford Sutherland’s gym is not regulation enough for sectional game (small court) so game will be at nearby Pittsford Mendon.

It was senior night and the final regular season game. The seniors were recognized before the game: Jay Greene, Luis Marrero, Tim Bauer, Ben Lester, Todd O’Dell, Scott Yates, and Nick Affronti.
Wayne started slow in the first quarter. 5 points from Greene and a single bucket from Bauer is all we could muster. Luckily, our defense kept the Braves in check, holding them to 9 points. In the second quarter, the baskets came a little easier as Lester and Marrero both had a pair of FGs, and Greene had a 3 pointer and a FG. Unfortunately, Canandaigua also picked up the pace, outscoring Wayne 17-13 in the quarter. A big help was a stop by Wayne with under 20 seconds left in the half and a last second basket by Marrero to get us within 6 points at 26 – 20.
The Eagles won the game with a big third quarter. Tim Bauer pumped in 8 points, Marrero 6, Lester 5, Greene 3, and O’Dell 2 as they outscored Canandaigua 24 – 11 to take a 44 – 37 lead. In the final quarter, Wayne answered when needed to maintain the lead. Marrero had 7 points, Greene 5, VanWagner 2, and Bauer 1 in the fourth.

In the fourth, Wayne made a run and got within 3 points with a couple minutes left, but Livonia held on and made their foul shots at the end.
Luis Marrero and Ben Lester were named to the All-Star squad and received plaques. Kevin Downey was named MVP. He had 29 points with Ben Lester all over him the whole game and 12 rebounds. He is one of the best in Section 5. Nothing flashy, just good fundamentals. A classic style jumpshot with good elevation and perfect form.

Marrero and Bauer each had two baskets in the third quarter and the Eagles led 36 – 24. Marrero and Bauer continued scoring in the fourth. Marrero hit a 3 pointer, along with a field goal and three free throws, and Bauer had a couple of big baskets along with 3 free throws to maintain the lead.

Wayne dropped a close game with Newark 67 – 63. Newark started strong and claimed a 19 – 16 lead after a quarter. Tim Bauer had two fouls early. Sass, O’Dell and VanWagner combined to keep some size in the middle. Jay Green pumped in 9 pts, including a 3 pointer to stay close. Luis Marrero started off the second quarter with a bucket for Wayne. Jay Greene and Ben Lester both hit 3 pointers, and Luis Marrero had a nice assist to Ben VanWagner on a penetration and dish off that enabled Wayne to pull even at 32-32 at the half. In the 3rd, Lester and Greene again each had a 3 pointer and Tim Bauer added 4 points, but Newark held a 2 point lead 49 – 47 at the start of the fourth. Bauer had 7 points, O’Dell 4, Greene 3, and a Marrero 2, but Newark held on for the 4 point win. I didn’t keep rebounding stats, but it seemed like Newark had an edge there that might have been the difference in the outcome.

Livonia was up 36-33 with about 4:20 left when they grabbed a couple of offensive rebounds and were fouled while shooting. A technical foul gave them 4 shots at the free throw line, possession and a lead Wayne couldn’t overcome.

Record 2 – 3

Another tough loss to a team with a big front line. A closer game than the final score makes it look. A poor second quarter where Wayne only scored 4 points made the difference. Victor jumped out to an early lead, but 3 buckets by Bauer and a 3 pointer by Lester pulled the Eagles to within 1 when the first quarter ended 15 – 14. In the second, Wayne had a long dry spell until Lester hit a 3 pointer with about 3 minutes left in the half, but Wayne was only able to add a foul shot before the half ended. Victor led 28 – 18. In the 3rd, three straight jumpers by Gavin Thomas and a bucket each by Greene, Marrero, and Bauer helped Wayne cut the lead to 8 points, 40 – 32. Early in the fourth, Wayne made a run with Bauer getting 9 points in the quarter and Marrero 5 as they cut the lead to 4, 48 – 44, but Victor answered with a 3 point play and held on to the lead. Free throws helped inflate the final score a little for Victor in the final minutes.

Record 2 – 2
Bauer – 10 pts
Lester – 8 pts
Greene – 8 pts
Sass – 5 pts
Yates – 2 pts
Thomas – 9 pts
O’Dell – 4 pts
Thomas and O’Dell got starts for Wayne, along with Sass, Bauer and Lester. Wayne started strong in the first quarter playing a box and 1 defense, which seemed to work well. Midlakes adjusted and chipped away at the lead which was Wayne 13 – 8 at the end of one quarter. Good shooting by Midlakes got them the lead at the half, 27 – 24. A series of trips down the court in the 3rd and 4th quarter that resulted in turnovers took away many scoring opportunities for Wayne. Midlakes worked the clock and hit some critical 3 pointers to maintain the lead until the finish.

Record 2 – 1
Marrero – 8 pts
Greene – 9 pts
Bauer – 2 pts

Thomas – 7 pts
O’Dell – 6 pts
The Eagles suffered a tough loss in their first road game of the year. Hopes were high after stunning Pal-Mac in their home opener last year, but it wasn’t to be. The game was closer than the final score indicated. Pal-Mac pulled out to a slight lead, eventually taking a 13 – 8 lead at the end of one. Wayne closed it up in the second quarter, holding Pal-Mac to 7 points and only trailing 20 – 19 at the half. Pal-Mac shot well again in the third quarter and Tim Bauer picked up his 3rd and 4th foul, one where he jumped absolutely straight up and got called for a personal, and another where he made a clean block and was whistled for it. It was no better at the other end of the floor, where he was pushed while shooting a turnaround jumper, and then was called for a foul on the rebound when he didn’t appear to be anywhere near the ball. Things went downhill from there as Wayne wasn’t hitting their shots and Pal-Mac continued their good shooting, even hitting a 3 pointer at the buzzer. Not much to write home about in this game, but Gavin Thomas and Todd O’Dell had good games coming off the bench.

Record 2 – 0
Marrero – 8 pts

Greene – 11 pts
Bauer – 10 pts
Sass – 7 pts
O’Dell – 4 pts
Yates – 2 pts
Batavia got out to a 5 – 0 lead early in the 1st quarter, but after some defensive adjustments, Wayne came back to tie it up at 5 all before taking a 10 – 7 lead at the quarter. In the second quarter, Wayne pulled out a substantial lead with good defense and shooting. Affronti, Yates, O’Dell, Van Wagner and Gavin Thomas all saw action. Lester hit a 3 pointer in the first half, and Bauer and Sass had a solid inside game.
In the 3rd, Batavia heated up and chipped away at the lead. Wayne wasn’t getting as many good looks at the basket and when they did, the shots weren’t falling. Batavia was only down by five, 39 – 34 at the start of the fourth quarter. Batavia kept the pressure on, and got within 1 point of the lead at 41 – 40, when Jay Greene hit a big 3 pointer to take a 4 point lead and get the Wayne fans going again. After missing a couple from the foul line earlier in the game, the Luis Marrero hit two crucial free throws. As Batavia tried to get back those points, Wayne forced a loose ball that Ben Lester made a great punch pass over a defender while Todd O’Dell streaked down court for a layup to ice the game.
Ben Lester and Mike Sass made the All Tournament Team, and Jay Greene was named the MVP.
